Elementary School, Here "We" Come!

The time has come. Five years ago I had just quit my job and was taking care of a newborn. This week, that newborn will go off to kindergarten. Everyone always says to enjoy the younger years because they go too fast. They were right. How is it possible that my little girl is preparing to go to elementary school??? In some ways, I feel like I was just there - going to Woodbridge Elementary in Catonsville, MD - such fond memories I have of my younger years. I absolutely loved elementary school. It's just hard to comprehend that I now have a child entering this new phase in her life. I'm excited, yet nervous for her at the same time. I always remember having butterflies in my stomach on the first day of school. I wonder if she will feel the same way. Allison is a very friendly and outgoing individual but she can become overwhelmed in large groups of kids, especially when she doesn't know any of them. Luckily my friend Erika's son is in her class, so there will be at least one familiar face. We know a couple other people who will also be starting kindergarten at her school but unfortunately they are in different classes. Maybe they will see each other in the hallways. I almost wish I could fast forward 1 month - hopefully all the kinks will be worked out by then - I'll be comfortable with the whole "drop off" process and the kids will have formed friendships with one another. I've heard nothing but great things about the school she is attending which gives me a reassuring feeling but I'm still nervous about the whole thing. Probably much more nervous that Allison. Tomorrow we get to go and meet her teacher and then she officially starts on Thursday. All schools in our county actually start on Tuesday but the kindergartners have a staggered start so they only have 1/3 of their class start on the their first day (which is either Tue, Wed or Thurs). I guess it helps ease them into it and helps the teacher get to know each of them better. So tomorrow our adventure begins. Check back later in the week for an update on how things went. Wish us luck!
