A Dose of Reality

I haven't been blogging too much recently. As some of you already know, our family was thrown for a loop this past week - my mom was diagnosed with uterine cancer. It's a hard thing to accept and even harder for me to write about it. It all came on rather suddenly. During a regular exam a couple weeks ago, her doctor found something suspicious and removed it for biopsy. She had to wait two long weeks for the results and we all had a feeling the news wasn't going to be good. Luckily she has wonderful doctors who are being very aggressive. She is having surgery on Tuesday to remove her uterus. The doctors thinks they were able to catch it early and they told my mom there is only a 14% chance that the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. So we're all very hopefull that removing the uterus will rid her of the cancer, but we will know more after the surgery. As you can imagine, it's been a tough week for all of us but my mom (always the optimist) has kept her spirits up. She has heard from so many friends and family offering their support and willingness to fly down for the surgery. Although, she jokes they just want to come for the warm weather! My mom probably won't be able to eat much the next few weeks so last night we all went out to a fabulous dinner and really enjoyed ourselves. I think it really helped to keep her occupied and spend time with the grandkids. I mean, how can these kiddos not make you smile:

Hopefully they can help give her strength as she recovers from this difficult surgery. The good part is I get to see my sister next week along with many other family members who will be visiting in the next month. All I ask is for you to keep my mom in your thoughts and prayers. I will post an update Tuesday (or Wed) after the surgery to let everyone know how it went.

I am going to be fine. Everyone, at some point in there life has to go through tough stuff. Its just my turn. I have a fantastic life with the most wonderful children, son-in laws, grandchildren and friends and I live in Heaven. I intend to be around to watch my grandchildren and future grandchildren grow up, celebrate their Bat and Bar Mitzvahs and dance at their weddiings. There is no way I am going to give all of this up. So no one needs to worry. Grandma

I thought separately I should mention Abe, who is the love of my life and he is so capable of handling everything until I recover. Grandma

Dear Amy and Jeff,
Boy, that is not fun. But I can attest to life with cancer. Your mom is so strong and she has the best medicine in the world - tons of family and friends to support her through this journey.
Y'all are in my prayers.
Leslie

Amy and Jeff: Time to rally the troops and it sounds like the calvary is already on the way. Les, is right, the best medicine is to be surrounded by those you love. Next best medicine is to watch as many funny movies as you can, starting with something serious like the Three Stooges. Certainly our thoughts and prayers are with you mother.
