To Outer Space and Then to Oz

So the space shuttle lifted off Friday night and since we only live a couple hours away I figured we might be able to see it (especially since it was a night launch). Allison was very excited about seeing the space shuttle in the sky but I told her not to expect much. I think she remembers the time two years ago when we were in Orlando and just happened to catch a night laugh from our hotel room. It was one of the most spectacular things I had ever seen. I knew this wouldn't compare but thought it would be neat if we could at least see it in the sky. So at 7:55 all four of us went outside with camera and binoculars in hand. and looked in the north sky. I saw a couple specs in the sky and said "Is that it? Is that it?" To which Jeff replies "No, that's it right there." I looked a little to the left and saw the bright orange light in the sky. We were actually able to see it much better than I had anticipated. I was even able to tell when the rocket separated from the booster (is that what's it's called? ). Jeff tried to take a picture but the picture didn't really show much. Here's what he was able to capture:

If you look real close you can see the blip of light in the middle. It was actually much more visible than that but this is what the camera caught. There was also a beautiful full moon on Friday night but that was also hard to capture without a super expensive camera or a greater knowledge of photography. Here's the best picture Jeff could get:

After watching the space shuttle we came inside, put Daniel to bed and watched the Wizard of Oz. Jeff thought it would scare the bajeezzus out of Allison but I told him it was rated G. I hadn't watched it in at least 15 years so I had forgotten most of it. Allison almost made it through without crying but she got upset when the Wicked Witch takes Dorothy. I had forgotten all about that part. Anyway, she stuck with it and enjoyed the rest of the movie. Luckily there were no nightmares that night.

Oh, I'm so proud of y'all for sharing Wizard of Oz with her. In about another year she and I can sit down and watch Auntie Mame together.

Those two movies alone will give her the foundation she needs for a fabulous life!
